Snehapana (Therapeutic ghee/sneha/~fat drinking intended for Detoxification)

Snehapana is a foundational Ayurvedic internal oleation therapy involving the oral consumption of medicated ghee or oils(fats- sneha) typically in increasing doses for 3 to 7 days.

As a crucial preparatory phase (Poorva Karma) for Panchakarma, it lubricates tissues, loosens deep-seated toxins (Ama), strengthens digestive fire (Agni), and prepares the body for purification.

Key Details and Benefits:

Purpose: Prepares the body for deep cleansing, such as Vamana (emesis) or Virechana (purgation) or Raktamokshana( blood letting)

Mechanism:

The fatty substances (Sneha) bind toxins and facilitate their movement from tissues to the digestive tract for expulsion.

Health Benefits: Improves digestion, calms the nervous system, enhances skin health (softens and increases luster), reduces joint stiffness, and may even aid in reducing blood lipids and abdominal circumference.

Procedure:

Usually administered early in the morning on an empty stomach under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician, with the dose tailored to the patient's digestive capacity.

Contraindications:

Not recommended during acute fever, severe indigestion, or for those with very weak digestive fire (Mandagni).
